In the early parts of 2003, college freshmen Matt Mullenweg wrote on his blog that he wanted to create a fork of B2/cafelog. He had been using the software to post photos from his trip to Washington D.C. He teamed with Mike Little to continue work on this new solution. This was around the same time that Valdrighi made an announcement that Little and Mullenweg would be taking lead on the B2/cafelog fork. The team launched the first version of WordPress in May 2003, using the same structure as B2/cafelog.

With our Anycast DNS solution, DNS records are duplicated across A2 Hosting’s global network ultimately bringing them closer to your visitors. Anycast DNS increases performance when your site is visited by offering quicker response times, lowering latency and increasing redundancy.
Prior to our 2017 update, InMotion was one of our top picks, and it passed all of our criteria for an excellent web host this time around, too, beating out scores of other contenders. But of our four finalists, it ranks a solid fourth place. It’s the only one of our top picks to not send us an email response. And while we received all of the answers we needed from friendly phone and live chat reps, they didn’t go out of their way to help: If we had a question, they answered. If there was a natural follow-up question, they left it up to us to ask. They’re also the most expensive, and the only one that doesn’t offer any type website building tool.
A few examples: An Aluminium Reseller account includes up to 30 free transfers. Out of this 30, you can have 20 cPanel to cPanel transfers and 10 Manual Transfers, or any combination of the two that totals 30 or less websites. Another example: A Pro Dedicated server includes unlimited cPanel to cPanel transfers, this means you can have 150 sites (or even more) moved. Also since there is an unlimited total number of transfers, you can utilize up to 100 Manual Transfers.
It’s hard to believe anyone would want to harm your website, but they do. Thankfully, our security team is on the job 24/7 to meticulously monitor, thwart suspicious activity and deflect DDoS attacks.
If you aren’t sure which type of hosting to choose, sign up for a shared account with monthly billing (HostGator is a good choice for this). That way, you can move to a VPS plan elsewhere without penalty, if you quickly outgrow your shared hosting space.
FastComet excelled at presentation. When we browsed their site as prospective customers, they consistently impressed us with timely, useful information, and when we signed up and logged into our account, we found our dashboard and toolkits similarly well-laid-out. The company boasts a clean interface, and it’s easy to find the information you want with just one or two button clicks.
Finally, there’s Wix. Unlike WordPress and Weebly, Wix is a browser-based platform, so you log in online, choose your theme, drag and drop to customize, and hit “PUBLISH.” Launching a blog is that simple. The platform is self-hosted, so you don’t have to think about what the servers are doing behind the scenes.
I’ve been doing a lot of research lately, trying to find better deals and services. I’m interested in what you think of WPX in comparison to what you’ve already recommended, like WP Engine and Bluehost. I want to hear more opinions from experts before committing to anything.
Since first publishing this guide over four years ago, we’ve analyzed 53 web hosting companies using a range of metrics. Only a handful made it through our stringent testing process, which I’ve shared below.
Finally, the big-girl hosting service: Dedicated server plans are for folks whose web properties are so resource-intensive and expecting so many visitors (+100,000/month) that they require an entire server solely dedicated to hosting their one, or many, site(s).
At this stage, we narrowed our list down to top 10 web hosting companies based on all of the criteria above. Because not all web hosting companies are suitable for everyone, we split our top 10 into two lists:
Our servers are fast. They’re also reliable. We understand if your site is down, your visitors can’t purchase from you. They can’t find your contact information. They can’t read your new blog post. The bottom line is downtime means lost opportunity. We get it.
What we liked most about HostMetro was its guarantee that the price is locked in. It gets major points for clarity. Unlike some other vendors, after your purchase period ends, you’re not going to be hit with a surprising new rate. While the company makes no mention of an SSD infrastructure, they do offer 24-7 telephone support, a 30-day money back guarantee, free site migration, and very clear terms of service.
Beyond that, Dreamhost is a 5-of-5 hosting company for many reasons. They operate their own control panel, which is convenient and easy to understand. While phone support isn’t available 24-7, they are responsive to chat and tickets. The company uses superfast SSDs for all their storage, has a free SSL certificate (for more secured web browsing), and provides SSH access for those plans that are intended for more technical users.
SiteGround offers unmatched prices for their WordPress hosting services, which was enough to put them on our radar. However, it was their WordPress-friendly features that sealed the deal, such as a free wildcard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, fast support, and daily backups with up to 30 copies in storage on their GrowBig plan (which we consider to be their best feature). In short, Siteground is perfect for bloggers & small business owners, don’t forget to use our link to get 60% off.

In our in-depth WordPress hosting review, we came to a conclusion that if you are looking to start a blog, then you cannot go wrong with Bluehost. The fact that they offer you a free domain and free SSL for the price of $2.75 per month, it’s very hard to beat.

While some companies claim that 99.5 percent of their customers will never have a throttling problem, if you store large amounts of media on your site, you still may get a warning from the hosting provider to reduce usage or you will be temporarily shut off. And because it’s a shared server, you are at risk of taking other customers’ allotted unlimited space. If you exceed bandwidth or disk space multiple times, you’ll be required to upgrade your plan.
Traditionally, Windows-based hosting costs more money than Linux hosting as a result of the licensing fees assessed by Microsoft (Linux is open source and therefore free to use). However, this is less true today. Some companies, like 1&1 and GoDaddy offer hosting packages that cost the about same, regardless of which operating system you choose to run.
