They do this in addition to using server hardware and software that is specifically optimised to run WordPress sites. The result? You can rest assured that your site will run fast, with good uptime, and without the risk of it being hacked.

Because we offer what is known as a shared architecture, our customers share both the hardware and the “pipes” we use to transmit data across the web, so we do monitor bandwidth to ensure optimum performance for our customers. Again, we are able to support more than 99.5% of customers with no issues at all. However, in some wonderful cases, customers become so successful that their traffic and data transfer outgrow our shared architecture. When that happens, we work with the customer to identify scalable solutions, such as our Virtual Private Servers.

Once we accessed our accounts, we tested the dashboard of each service. The standard interface is called the cPanel, while some services, like iPage, use their own control panel, which allows for more customization. We evaluated which tools are available in the basic shared hosting plans, taking into account features like simple email creation, a disk-usage meter and access to create cron jobs. Many services in our lineup have the option to back up a site manually or utilize a one-click install section.

I actually met Hostinger’s CEO (Arnas) earlier this year at a conference – great guy and very ambitious with what he’s doing at Hostinger. Coincidentally, they were the very first web hosting company that I used when I started out (14-15 years ago). They’re certainly not a bad option, but I haven’t used them for over 10 years. For the price, I would personally steer towards something like Bluehost or InMotion.

If you built and ran your own server, you’d have to take care of all of this yourself. And after all, with web hosting now costing as little as $2.95/month and including 24/7 support – it has become a no-brainer to use a web hosting company.

It’s a pity, as I’ve used Pagely for my site and loved it. I am grandfathered in at $69, and they’ve taken good care of me. I hope I don’t wind up having to move because they choose to orphan smaller businesses.

Finally, the big-girl hosting service: Dedicated server plans are for folks whose web properties are so resource-intensive and expecting so many visitors (+100,000/month) that they require an entire server solely dedicated to hosting their one, or many, site(s).

GoDaddy surprised me in more ways than one. GoDaddy started at a blazing 483 ms response time, but once traffic hit 25 users, it essentially fell off the face of the earth. The report lists times of above 4 minutes, and that may be true, but it almost looks like the server became completely unresponsive or started rejecting connections. The load test reported a number of failed attempts to connect to the server. While GoDaddy shined at lower traffic levels, it fell apart completely as traffic passed the 25 user mark.
